Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Acupuncture and moxibustion are two of the main therapies of Chinese traditional medicine. Acupuncture is the use of fine needles and other related tools to stimulate areas of the body so as to treat disease, and reestablish body-mind homeostasis. Moxibustion is a type of heat therapy that uses burning mugwort leaves to stimulate the same points used in acupuncture. In particular, moxibustion is applied to the body to promote longevity and prevent disease. These two therapies are so closely intertwined that the word in Chinese and Japanese that we translate typically as "acupuncture" is really Zhen Jiu 針灸/针灸 (Hari Kyu in Japanese), a compound term meaning "acu-moxa therapy."
